Fire Safety Tips: How to Safely Extinguish Your Fire

At FireWood Fuel MK, we care about your warmth and safety. Knowing how to safely extinguish a fire is crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring your home stays safe. Here are some quick and effective tips to help you put out your fire safely.

1. Allow the Fire to Burn Down

If possible, let the fire burn down to ashes. This reduces the intensity and makes it easier to manage. Always supervise the fire during this process to ensure it doesn’t reignite.

2. Spread the Ashes

Using a poker or a fire tool, spread the remaining embers and ashes to disperse the heat. This helps cool down the fire more quickly.

3. Use Sand or Baking Soda

For small, contained fires, sprinkling sand or baking soda can effectively smother the flames. Avoid using water unless necessary, as it can create steam and spread ash, posing a burn risk.

4. Douse with Water (Only if Necessary)

If you need to use water, do so cautiously:

Gradually Pour Water: Slowly pour water over the ashes and embers.

Stir Thoroughly: Use a long-handled tool to stir the ashes, ensuring all embers are wet.

Repeat: Continue adding water and stirring until the fire is completely out.

5. Check for Residual Heat

After you believe the fire is out, feel for any remaining heat. Place your hand near, but not on, the ashes to ensure they are cool. This step is vital to confirm there are no hidden embers that could reignite.

6. Dispose of Ashes Safely

Once the ashes are completely cool, dispose of them in a metal container with a lid. Keep the container outside, away from any flammable materials, for at least 24 hours before discarding them.

7. Keep Fire Extinguishing Tools Handy

Always have a fire extinguisher, sand, or a bucket of water nearby when you’re using your fireplace or wood stove. Quick access to these tools can make all the difference in an emergency.
